Chapter 36

Overview

Back in the saferoom, Carl reunites with his guild, sends a warning toward Zockau, and learns how close his allies came to joining the battle. His reward haul is a mixed blessing: useful patches, gold, and a major Strength milestone come paired with a dangerous Diwata apostate tattoo that makes another god and her followers his enemies. By the end, Carl strengthens his build with new gear and the Swole upgrade while the guild’s chaotic warmth confirms where he belongs.

Summary

Carl shoves Bomo out into the Zockau saferoom with a note, hoping to warn the last male mantis before Vrah can reach him. Florin briefly appears to confirm that Lucia survived, and Mordecai tells Carl and Donut to clear out quickly because Lucia may come back later, even if her spell likely took her far away.

Once the immediate danger passes, Carl takes comfort in being surrounded by guildmates and thinks of them as his family. Elle catches Carl up on recent events: Chris is with Li Jun and Li Na watching Eva and Team Cichociemni, the Popov brothers are still away at CrawlCon, and the group only missed reaching Carl because Katia turned them around to help and their flying house was attacked. Donut examines Bautista’s cat beanies that helped fool Lucia and Vrah, while Bautista explains he still has hundreds left and has been training with Tran. Louis then proudly demonstrates a risky new tactic that uses thrown equipment to auto-equip onto Katia, possibly letting her scale up with giant armor, and Carl cautiously encourages the idea after learning Katia is trying to build Louis’s confidence.

Carl opens a backlog of achievements and loot. The rewards confirm several things Carl did not fully understand during the battle: he earned credit for forcing a rooted boss to move, he was nearly teleported into a solid object when Zev sent him back, and Lucia had already desecrated a Diwata temple before Carl accidentally smashed its shrine by crashing through the roof. Carl also gets mocked by the AI for stabbing Vrah with an arrow instead of shooting it and for infecting her with a venereal-disease arrow, while a foot-related bombing achievement turns into another unsettling reminder of the AI’s fixation. During the discussion, Donut shows off her own useful reward, a vocal-coach training room that can improve the substance of her illusion voices.

The loot itself is valuable but dangerous. Carl gains gold, potions, a cloak he gives to Firas, and two upgrade patches for his jacket. The Gold Apostate Box brands Carl with a large Enemy of the Church tattoo tied to Diwata, which means Diwata’s followers will attack him on sight, he can no longer worship her or allied gods, and he now deals bonus damage to her adherents, especially because he already follows Emberus. While inspecting the new bomb-themed patch, Carl finally realizes that Donut’s strange Earth hobby potion gave her expertise in embroidery and patches, and Britney unexpectedly confirms the word’s meaning.

With Katia sewing the new patches onto Carl’s jacket, Carl raises his base Strength to 100 and receives a permanent upgrade choice. After comparing a long-term strength-scaling option, a situational hand-to-hand bonus, and a foot-based stagger effect, Carl follows Mordecai and Katia’s advice and chooses Swole, doubling future level-up Strength gains. Even though the new tattoo, the shrine debt, and the AI’s manipulation leave Carl uneasy, the chapter ends with Carl feeling that the noisy, argumentative saferoom is still home.
