Chapter 74
Overview
Donut and Big Tina turn the Masquerade stage show into a magical distraction, charming nearly everyone in the chamber so Carl’s group can set their escape plan in motion. The plan reaches its true cost when Signet deliberately kills herself beside Imogen, breaking the divine seal protecting the room. Her sacrifice ends the party’s protections, removes key NPCs from the field, and gives Carl the opening to trigger the next phase of the escape.
Summary
Donut takes the stage alone, uses a charm potion, and sings "All Eyes on Me," a song Bea used to sing to her. Ferdinand proudly watches from the judges’ table, and Carl receives a notification that Ferdinand has joined Donut’s party. Donut’s performance casts a minor charm over the room, focusing everyone’s attention on the stage and creating the distraction Carl’s group needs.
Britney shifts into a new song, and Big Tina appears under the spotlight. Donut recharges Tina’s wand, which turns out to cast another performance charm called The Recital, making the audience feel happy, eager, and fully invested in the show. While Tina dances with a line of absurdly costumed velociraptors, Carl’s group uses the distraction to prepare the improvised escape plan, and Carl orders Sledge to begin a spell even though it will send Sledge, Ferdinand, and others to the ninth floor.
As the charm persists, Signet grows brighter and more rigid, and Vrah is the first hunter to realize something is wrong. Imani directs people on the right side of the room to move onto solid floor tiles, anticipating danger. Signet asks Carl for a knife, thanks him, touches his cheek, and tells Carl to protect his own family and watch over hers.
When the charm fades, the hunters begin shouting, and Signet sits beside Imogen. Signet says her two regrets are not saying goodbye to Grimaldi and not being the one to kill Imogen, then speaks of the life she and her mother meant to leave for. She immediately cuts her own throat. At that instant, every acorn falls from the upside-down tree, the floor tears open, and Signet is pulled into the Nothing as Imogen tries to grab her.
Signet vanishes, leaving behind swirling tattoos and blood that rise into a growing, ghostly vortex. A system warning announces that Apito has turned her back, the seal is broken, the Butcher’s Masquerade has failed, and the chamber’s protection has ended. The judges and Chaco disappear in flashes of lightning, and Carl reacts at once by using the ring of divine suffering to mark Vrah, throwing smoke curtains into the room, and ordering the escape to begin.
