Chapter 46

Overview

Carl and Donut flee a hostile dryad town, accidentally leaving it burning behind them, and continue toward Miriam Dom with Mordecai’s newly finished potions. Before they can reach her, Carl is ambushed by Sierra, an infected vampire flyer tied to Viscount Fog, showing how far the plague has spread. The fight ends with Carl killing Sierra and learning that Donut’s light can burn vampires, giving them a crucial new weapon.

Summary

Carl waits inside the dryad saferoom while Donut sedates Mongo long enough to collect a large flask of his blood for Mordecai’s potion-making. Mordecai finishes the needed mixtures, including a Charm Animal potion, while Carl stays focused on Miriam Dom’s urgent call for help. With the town hostile to Carl, Donut creates a smoke screen, Carl uses invisibility to slip out, and the pair hurry for the gate.

As they leave, Carl tells Donut to hit only the dryad mayor with a magic missile, but Donut ignores him and launches a fireball instead. The spell ignites the mayor and then spreads through the buildings despite the rain, setting much of the town ablaze. Carl and Donut escape, pass through another similar dryad settlement to retrieve the completed Charm Animal potion, and continue west toward Miriam and Prepotente.

Because Miriam’s directions are imprecise, Carl uses a levitation potion to rise above the forest and asks Miriam to fire sparks as a beacon. He spots the signal far to the south, but before he can return safely, an undead flying creature slams into him and triggers a special boss battle. The attacker is Sierra, a level 65 Northropi Vampire and bereft minion of Viscount Fog, who was infected after failing to save her master from Miriam Dom.

Sierra grabs Carl in her talons and nearly tears him apart in midair. Donut attacks with magic missiles and then summons her light, which makes Sierra recoil and catches the vampire’s head on fire, revealing that Donut’s light is highly effective against vampires. Carl survives with Heal, holy water, and a half-splat potion, then crashes through Sierra’s body with his gauntlet, falls to the ground, and realizes the monster still lives because its heart remains intact.

Remembering vampire lore may differ on this floor, Carl improvises and drives a jagged branch into Sierra’s detached, still-beating heart. The boss finally explodes into gore, drops a neighborhood map, and confirms both the danger of the spreading vampiric infection and the usefulness of Donut’s light against it. Afterward, Carl stops Mongo from eating the corpse, worried the infection could spread that way as well.
