Chapter 12
Overview
After Mongo runs off with the female raptors, Donut suffers a panic attack that exposes her growing fear of abandonment, intensified by social media pressure and the deadly ninth-floor Blood Sultanate obligation hanging over her. Carl realizes her usual joking evasions are no longer enough and gives her a direct promise that he will not leave her behind, strengthening their partnership at a critical moment. Mongo returns safely after mating, but signs of larger dinosaurs, a strange glint in the forest, and ongoing attacks on town show that outside threats are still closing in.
Summary
Carl pulls Donut into a pub to get her out of danger after Mongo runs into the female raptor pack. Inside, Donut is shaking so badly that Carl first suspects a spell or injury, but he finds no obvious cause. After several minutes, Donut admits that Mongo running off triggered a terror like an old car accident with Miss Beatrice. She says she is supposed to pretend she does not know something, then blurts out her deeper fear: everyone leaves her, including Katia, and Carl keeps taking risks that could get him killed.
As Donut spirals, Carl realizes something she read on the social media board likely set her off. Zev suddenly interrupts with a message that the visit with Odette has been moved and that Carl will face extra scrutiny before the trailer. Carl recognizes the interruption as a warning not to press the issue in public, which suggests Zev and Donut know more than Carl can safely discuss here.
Donut then asks the question underlying her panic: what will happen on the ninth floor. Carl remembers that, because of the Blood Sultanate crown, Donut is trapped in the royal succession and cannot descend until the Sultan and all other royal family members are dead. Realizing that vague reassurances are no longer enough, Carl finally tells Donut directly that he will not leave her behind on the ninth floor or any other floor. The promise deeply matters to Donut, and the moment restores her composure.
Donut abruptly senses Mongo returning, and Carl follows her outside. Mongo stumbles back into town exhausted but apparently unharmed, implying he successfully mated with the raptor leader. At the forest edge, Kiwi and the other female raptors watch briefly before withdrawing. Donut also detects more dinosaurs deeper in the woods, including a very large one, while Carl catches a brief prism-like glint in the jungle just before the sky darkens and rain begins.
As they joke about Kiwi possibly being pregnant, Carl receives a strange new achievement, Double-Billed, and notices his viewer count has surged. A missile fires and explodes somewhere in town, reminding Carl that the settlement still needs defending. After confirming Donut has recovered, Carl ends the pause and heads back to work.
