Chapter 7
Overview
After leaving Miriam and Prepotente in a looted settlement, Carl and Donut regroup with Katia's party in a saferoom and face the fallout from Carl's attack on Zockau. Donut shuts down Mordecai's expected lecture by choosing to stay with Carl while demanding more trust and planning between them. Mordecai stresses the urgency of fleeing before the hunters are released, but Carl is already thinking ahead to an even bigger explosion, showing that he is becoming more committed to escalating the fight.
Summary
Carl, Donut, Miriam, Prepotente, and Bianca stop in a looted bugbear settlement near Zockau. Miriam explains that the town itself is safe because the funeral bell mushroom guards deactivate the traps, but the surrounding settlements have already been stripped by other crawlers. Carl decides there is no reason to linger, and the group plans to reset buffs, watch the recap, and move on.
Before separating, Carl exchanges goodbyes and promises with Miriam and Prepotente to warn each other if their paths cross again. Carl remains uneasy around Bianca and notes that he still wants information, especially about Club Vanquisher, but Prepotente seems too unstable for a useful conversation. After they part, Donut argues that Miriam and Prepotente are probably good people and points out that their attempt to manipulate enemies into killing each other was safer than Carl's direct assault.
Carl and Donut enter a saferoom disguised as a pub but operating as a Whataburger. While Carl gets a drink and Donut finally releases Mongo, they discuss the results of Carl's raid. Carl insists his approach was more effective because he and Donut have now killed thirty-five hunters, while Donut warns that the surviving hunters will all be hunting Carl in return.
Inside the personal space, Carl and Donut reunite with Katia, Very Sullen, Louis, Firas, Britney, and Mordecai. Katia is visibly angry because Carl had promised not to do anything reckless, and Chris and Clay-ton are still outside waiting for Team Meadow Lark. The tension in the room centers on Carl's latest stunt and the expectation that Mordecai is about to lecture him.
Donut cuts Mordecai off before he can begin. She bluntly admits that Carl's actions were reckless, refuses to abandon him, and declares that Carl will have to tell her his plans in advance from now on. Mordecai accepts that argument, tells them to open their prize boxes, reset their buffs, watch the recap, and put more distance between themselves and Zockau because the city attack killed only a fraction of the hunters.
Carl downplays the scale of the destruction, insisting he only blew up part of the city, not all of it. When Mordecai asks whether Carl already has another plan, Carl confirms that he does and reveals he is already imagining an even larger bomb. With the hunters set to be released in just over thirteen hours, the chapter ends with Carl energized by the floor's potential for more destruction.
