Chapter 1

Overview

On the sixth floor, Carl immediately learns the Gate of the Feral Gods has made him such a threat that the Syndicate pressures him to give it up, offering only catastrophic alternatives if he refuses. Carl resists by demanding a lawyer, then rejoins staging and learns more about the brutal hunter-based structure of the Hunting Grounds. As Donut embraces a bard path and Carl chooses the bomb-focused Agent Provocateur specialization, the chapter sets up a floor where survival will depend on preparation, sabotage, and avoiding predators stronger than expected.

Summary

Carl arrives on the sixth floor, the Hunting Grounds, and is pulled into a private meeting with Orren, the Syndicate liaison. Katia is already there because she had been holding the Gate of the Feral Gods, but she tells the officials Carl is the true owner, so she is sent back to staging. Orren places the gate’s three components on his desk and makes it clear the meeting is really about Carl, who has become too dangerous after devastating the faction armies on the previous floor.

Orren explains that the Gate of the Feral Gods is a system-breaking artifact the AI created in a way that bypassed normal safeguards. Because it could let Carl destroy the entire floor through mass portal use, the showrunners want him to surrender it voluntarily. Orren says they cannot legally confiscate it through the system, so he offers three outcomes instead: shut down all portal access on the floor and cause chaos, accelerate Carl and kill him and anyone nearby, or hold the winding box until Carl reaches the ninth floor. Carl stalls by asking about the caprid liaison who helped Maggie cheat, but Orren refuses to explain and says only that the matter was handled. Carl then demands a lawyer, which clearly matters to Orren and the unseen audience.

Carl is returned to the staging arena, where most crawlers have already finished specialization. Through chat, Katia tells Carl this floor resembles the third floor but is much more overgrown, and she says she took a HAZMAT endorsement for her Monster Truck Driver class. Donut proudly reveals that she chose the temporary bard class Legendary Diva, which horrifies Carl but pleases Mordecai, who says it gives her strong new enchantment abilities and works well with her Character Actor skill. Carl reaches the end of the line, briefly meets an injured crawler named Ajib, and watches the arena workers close the area around him.

A floor announcement reveals the main structure of the sixth floor. The crawlers have a 30-hour grace period before 360 hunters are released, with more expected to join, and all hunters have been boosted to level 50 because the crawlers reached this floor early. The announcement also says the floor contains 2,344 exits to the seventh floor, including at least one unguarded exit in the city of Zockau. While listening, Carl speaks with Ian, a Bush Elf attendant who says he was once a human crawler and implies many service NPCs are former crawlers. Ian warns Carl to avoid Zockau, says hunters do not fight fairly, and names Vrah, a mantis hunter who kills crawlers and keeps their heads.

Carl enters the tiny specialization booth and is given ten minutes to choose a permanent Compensated Anarchist specialty: Revolutionary, Guerilla, or Agent Provocateur. He studies the options and weighs raw melee strength, trap utility, and advanced explosives crafting, knowing Mordecai wants him to choose the fighting path. In the end, Carl decides his future depends more on sabotage and bomb-making than direct combat, so he selects Agent Provocateur and becomes a level 47 Agent Provocateur.
