Chapter 18
Overview
Odette reveals that Beatrice is alive and was secretly removed from Earth after bounty hunters tried to capture her for Borant. The disclosure exposes both Odette’s murky motives and a scheme to use Beatrice as leverage in the crawl and in off-screen corporate bargaining. When Carl wants to refuse the spectacle, Donut chooses to go through with an on-air reunion anyway, turning the chapter into a major emotional and strategic turning point for both of them.
Summary
Odette tells Carl and Donut that Beatrice survived the initial collection. Odette says bounty hunters were trying to capture Beatrice and illegally sell her to Borant so Beatrice could be transformed into a country boss, so Odette had Beatrice removed from Earth. Odette frames the rescue as protection for Carl and Donut, arguing that if Beatrice had remained accessible, enemies would have used her against them in a devastating way. Carl does not trust that explanation, angrily presses Odette for her real motive, and is especially disturbed when Odette admits she had even considered killing Beatrice.
When Carl demands clearer answers, Odette deflects by invoking her history with Mordecai and saying that story would explain her actions. Zev then cuts through the evasions and reveals that Odette is also using Beatrice as leverage against Borant. According to Zev, Borant will publicly get credit for saving Beatrice, while Odette quietly receives a higher revenue share for the rest of the crawl. Odette insists that contract was not her main reason, but Carl becomes even more suspicious.
Zev explains the immediate danger: after Carl opens his fan box, he is scheduled to be sent alone to a fan interaction event where another program plans to ambush him with the story of Beatrice being alive. Because of that impending stunt, Odette wants Carl and Donut informed first and asks permission to bring Beatrice onto Odette’s show remotely. Carl realizes Odette has been steering toward this reveal and erupts, refusing to go on the show and threatening Odette if this is another manipulation.
Donut, despite being shaken to the point of near sobbing, takes control of the decision. Donut tells Carl that he must trust her, argues that the reunion is likely unavoidable, and chooses to proceed so they can face it on their own terms instead of being blindsided. Donut thanks Odette for saving Beatrice from becoming a boss and agrees to begin the program normally before doing the reunion. After Odette disappears, Zev remains visibly rattled and warns Carl to focus on supporting Donut rather than asking more questions. Lexis announces they are almost on, and Carl calls Donut over so they can speak privately before going out.
