After killing Akland, Carl sees that the Ring of Divine Suffering has leveled up and now grants two stat points per kill. Carl gains a constitution point, two trophies, and reaches level 55. While looting Akland’s body in front of the nervous Holger and Clint, Carl finds only crawler biscuits and an Arrow of Enthusiastic Double Gonorrhea, which Carl concludes was meant for Louis.

Carl briefly worries about Juice Box, reasoning that if Louis is being hunted so aggressively, the changeling on the ninth floor is probably also in danger. Donut then confronts Carl about how brutally Carl handled Akland, saying Carl’s growing anger scares her. Carl admits Donut is right, promises to kill more cleanly in the future, and Donut tries to redirect the moment by suggesting Carl add more theatrical flair instead of pure rage.

Trying to lighten the mood, Carl offers Donut a new item from the loot: the Enchanted Obsidian Bracelet of the Raggle Rouser. Donut is thrilled when she reads its powers, and equips it immediately. The bracelet boosts Donut’s constitution and dexterity, gives fire resistance, and lets Donut cast a level-10 fireball every twenty minutes, prompting Carl to warn Donut not to use it in tight spaces.

After Carl stores Akland’s remains, Samantha rolls away and startles an ursine cleric by barking obscenities about Pawna. This leads Donut to compare Samantha to the dangerous rolling monsters from Critters. Donut points out that Samantha is already stronger and faster than Mordecai predicted a withering spirit could become, which unsettles Carl; however, Carl decides they cannot abandon Samantha because they still plan to use her to take the naiad castle and because Samantha’s newfound ability to bring items back makes her even more valuable.
