Chapter 71: Silo 18
Overview
In the middle of the fighting in Silo 18, Shirly reaches the control room and learns Mechanical is escalating the conflict by trying to reroute generator exhaust into IT through the silo’s infrastructure. Walker then uses the repaired radio in hopes of contacting Juliette, but an unknown voice answers instead, warns them away, and claims their friend is dead. The chapter turns a moment of hope into a new threat and deepens the uncertainty surrounding Juliette and the larger struggle between silos.
Summary
Shirly runs into the generator room after the door slams behind her, muting the gunfire outside. Workers in Mechanical are hiding from the fighting, and Shirly pushes on to the control room, where she gives the two transmitters to Walker. Before she reaches him, she notices Karl and other second-shift workers tampering with the generator’s exhaust system.
Inside the control room, Courtnee reacts with shock to the news that Juliette may still be alive, while Walker tries to make the transmitter work. Courtnee explains that Heline has proposed a counterattack: because a cooling feed for IT’s server room passes through Mechanical, the workers think they can reroute the generator’s poisonous exhaust upward and force IT to suffer the fumes. Shirly is uneasy about the plan, because it would hit people in IT broadly rather than only the fighters above.
As Walker works, Courtnee asks how Shirly is holding up. Shirly admits she is exhausted, injured, hungry, overwhelmed by the violence, and still reeling from learning that Juliette might have survived. She then speaks more honestly about grieving Marck, saying she misses him but is also relieved he is not alive to witness the chaos or to suffer what may happen when their enemies reach Mechanical.
Walker finally gets the transmitter working and calls out, hoping to reach Juliette. A voice answers through the speaker, and for a moment Shirly feels hope, but she quickly realizes the speaker is not Juliette. Walker identifies himself and asks who is there and where they are. The unknown person responds cryptically that they are "nowhere," warns them to stay away, and then claims that their friend is dead and that they killed him, replacing Mechanical’s brief surge of hope with fear and confusion.
