Bernard watches Juliette Nichols’s cleaning from the cafeteria, treating it as confirmation that the silo’s system still works. He reflects on how every cleaner, once shown the false beautiful world on the visor display, eventually gives in and wipes the sensors, no matter what promises they made beforehand. Bernard takes private satisfaction in this manipulation and assumes Juliette will follow the same pattern.

Instead, Juliette shocks him. Bernard sees that the camera lenses remain dirty while Juliette walks past them without cleaning. Rather than collapsing quickly like other cleaners, Juliette keeps moving with strength, pauses near the bodies of two earlier cleaners, then climbs the hill and disappears from sight, violating Bernard’s expectation that no one can survive or leave the camera’s view.

The sight throws Bernard into panic. He races down the stairs, past his techs and rising onlookers, and pushes through security on level thirty-four to reach a heavily fortified server room. As Bernard runs, his fear sharpens around a central failure: beyond preserving the silo’s data, his highest mandate is to make sure no one outside is ever lost from observation, and Juliette has now done exactly that.

Inside the hot server room, Bernard’s thoughts turn to control, secrecy, and resentment. He broods over Mechanical, the vents, and Juliette’s long challenge to his authority, while also reminding himself that he still holds power as head of IT and acting mayor. Even so, Bernard knows this breach is larger than local politics, so he opens a hidden compartment in a server, takes out a concealed headset, and places a covert call.

At the end of the chapter, Bernard contacts another location and says, “Silo one? This is silo eighteen.” He nervously reports that they may have a slight problem, revealing that Juliette’s escape has consequences beyond her own silo and that Bernard answers to a wider system.
