Chapter 39
Overview
Juliette survives entry into the neighboring silo, but only after nearly suffocating in her sealed suit and stumbling through a dark interior filled with corpses. The chapter reveals that this silo is dead and abandoned, yet its air is still breathable, giving Juliette her first real chance to live after cleaning. That discovery changes her immediate goal from simple survival to exploring a new mystery: what destroyed this silo and what it means for the lies of her own.
Summary
Juliette forces her way through the inner airlock of the neighboring silo and seals it behind her, but her suit air is almost gone. In complete darkness, with no screens or lights working, Juliette feels along the familiar layout and pushes deeper inside, desperate to escape the outside and find breathable air before she passes out.
While crossing the sheriff’s office, Juliette trips over multiple corpses and realizes the silo is full of dead people. Juliette reaches the office door and repeatedly rams it until it opens enough for her to squeeze through. On the other side, she finds a dim green glow from emergency lighting and a barricade of tables and chairs, which suggests the people in this silo tried to block something off before they died.
As Juliette’s stale suit air makes her weaker, Juliette assumes the outside contamination on her suit will kill her if she opens the helmet. Juliette briefly considers dying inside the suit, preserved by Walker’s careful work, but curiosity and the need to know the truth push Juliette to act. Juliette crosses the cafeteria into the kitchen looking for water or cold storage to wash or neutralize whatever poison she fears is covering the suit, but the taps are dry and the freezer appears dead.
With no better option, Juliette pours containers of soup over her suit in the dark walk-in, hoping to dilute the contamination. When her air finally runs out, Juliette cannot work the helmet latches with her thick gloves, so Juliette crawls out, grabs a knife, and uses it to release the catches. After tearing off the helmet, Juliette gulps in air that reeks of rot and decay, but the air is breathable. Realizing she has survived, Juliette laughs wildly and stumbles toward the stairwell light, alive inside a dead silo.
