Chapter 81: Silo 18
Overview
Severely burned but alive, Juliette is rescued from the airlock and slowly recovers in Silo 18's infirmary with Lukas constantly at her side. As her mind clears, letters from down deep force her to face the revolt's losses, especially the deaths of Knox and Marck. Lukas also reveals that Peter Billings chose to save her and, rather than obey Bernard's lethal orders, began asserting his own authority as the law.
Summary
Juliette drifts in and out of awareness after the airlock ordeal, feeling scattered flashes of pain from burns across her body. In her brief clear moments, she remembers the fog, her melting helmet, and Peter Billings looking through the visor and calling for help. Other people pull her out of the overheated airlock, cut the ruined suit from her body, and carry her through familiar corridors and down to medical care.
She wakes more fully in the infirmary on level thirty-three, surrounded by monitors and medical staff who remind her of her parents. Lukas is there when she opens her eyes, holding her hand, crying and laughing with relief. Recovery is slow because the burns are severe and widespread, and Juliette spends days and then weeks in a haze of painkillers. Lukas remains at her bedside, Peter visits, and everyone else is kept away while she heals and is protected.
Once Juliette chooses clearer thought over heavier medication, her mind returns faster than her body. She learns where she is, speaks with Lukas, and begins reading the many notes sent from down deep. The letters make the cost of the failed uprising real to her, especially the deaths of Knox and Marck, and she cries repeatedly as she tries to keep track of who is gone and who is still alive. She desperately wants to see Shirly, but she is told she cannot. At night, nightmares of drowning, burning, the outside, and the many silos she saw continue to haunt her, and Lukas comforts her through them.
Lukas later explains how Juliette survived. During the march that was supposed to send Lukas out to clean, Peter heard Juliette's voice over the radio and realized she was still alive. That discovery led Peter and Lukas to talk while reports came in that people in Mechanical were surrendering and Bernard was sentencing them to death anyway. Lukas pressed Peter to decide whether he would merely enforce Bernard's expectations or act according to justice, and he told Peter that Bernard had killed a man and that he could prove it. With IT security far away and only one gun at the top, Peter recognized that the law there was his, and he chose to use that authority.
