Chapter 12
Overview
Jahns and Marnes finish their descent into Mechanical and meet Juliette Nichols at work rather than in an interview setting. Seeing Juliette manage a dangerously misaligned generator convinces Jahns of her competence, while Juliette’s blunt warnings reveal that the silo’s power system is at risk because essential maintenance has been deferred. The conversation also sharpens suspicion of IT, which Juliette says consumes enormous power and would resist any shutdown needed to prevent a future disaster.
Summary
On the second day of the descent, Mayor Jahns settles into the rhythm of the long staircase and feels unexpectedly renewed. At level one hundred, she and Marnes rest in the busy market, eat bread, cheese, and apple, and enjoy briefly feeling anonymous among the crowd. Jahns reflects on how little people in the silo travel and senses that, because of her age and the effort of the trip, this may be her last journey so far down.
As they continue, the traffic gradually changes from general travelers to workers in blue overalls, signaling that they have reached the upper edge of Mechanical. Jahns and Marnes wait their turn at the gate rather than use their rank, then ask to see Juliette Nichols immediately instead of waiting for her shift to end. A guard directs them to Knox, the imposing head of Mechanical, who sends an orange-haired young shadow to guide them down to Juliette.
The deeper corridors of Mechanical feel cramped, rough, and industrial, with exposed pipes, dim lights, and heavy traffic. On the way, Jahns mistakes an oil pump for the generator, and Marnes explains that the pump brings up oil used to produce power. This reinforces how much of the silo’s essential machinery is unfamiliar even to its mayor.
When they enter the generator room, Jahns is overwhelmed by the noise and scale of the machinery. They find Juliette working beside the massive engine, using a huge wrench while wearing a hard hat and hearing protection. In the control room, Juliette offers Marnes sympathy for losing Holston, then immediately explains that the generator is badly misaligned: the vibration they feel means parts are grinding themselves down, and without proper maintenance the machine could eventually fail catastrophically.
Juliette says the problem is preventable, but a full shutdown is impossible because the silo is under orders to maintain uninterrupted power. Jahns realizes that, instead of interviewing Juliette, she is being educated by her. Juliette bluntly blames IT for consuming a disproportionate amount of power and doubts they would agree to cut back for repairs. Jahns begins thinking about a possible power holiday to permit maintenance, while Marnes reminds her they came to recruit Juliette as sheriff. Juliette refuses to discuss the job further while she is working, agrees to meet them later at the bunkhouse, and returns to the generator, leaving Jahns with a clearer sense of both Juliette’s ability and the silo’s hidden vulnerability.
