Chapter 65: Silo 18
Overview
Amid the battle in Silo 18, Walker and Shirly retreat to the generator room and desperately rebuild their homemade radio. Their work pays off when they unexpectedly hear Juliette's voice calling for Solo, proving that Juliette is alive in Silo 17. The discovery transforms the radio from a curiosity into a vital link and gives Silo 18 a sudden, emotional surge of hope.
Summary
As fighting drives people downward in Silo 18, Walker is shoved down the stairs with a tub of radio parts while Shirly carries the rest of the homemade set. Mechanics are welding steel plates across passages, miners haul more barriers into place, and gunfire sounds from above. Shirly leads Walker to the generator room, where Jenkins is controlling access and trying to secure the floor.
Jenkins dismisses the radio as useless in the middle of the attack, but Shirly insists on getting Walker inside. Once in the control room, Shirly clears out the people sheltering there so they can work around the generator controls. She checks the fuel and confirms the tanks are full, which means they still have power for weeks, and Walker begins sorting the damaged radio components on the floor.
Walker asks for power, and Shirly plugs the set in. He then tells Shirly to string the antenna outside the control room without letting the metal parts touch the railing, and Shirly gets mechanics to help untangle and hang it. When Walker realizes they forgot speakers, Shirly quickly grabs a set of communication earmuffs from the station outside, and Walker cuts the jack off and wires them into the radio.
With the set working, Walker has Shirly turn the tuning knob slowly so they can search beyond the voices they had already found. As she listens through static, Shirly reflects on the revolt, the deaths, and the cost of their anger, wondering what punishment will come and whether any of it was worth losing the life she had. Then the speakers crackle, Walker signals her to tune back, and a voice comes through clearly: Juliette calling for Solo and asking what is happening.
Shirly drops the tuning knob in shock. Both Shirly and Walker instantly recognize Juliette's unmistakable voice, which means she is alive and somehow speaking from another silo. Walker, overwhelmed by confused relief and joy, begins to cry as the impossible message reaches them.
