Chapter 18
Overview
Juliette is shown in a sealed airlock, suited up and waiting before the forbidden outer door as the chamber prepares her for what comes next. The chapter shifts the story into a moment of stark inevitability, forcing Juliette to reflect on how a mechanic from the deep levels has been driven to the edge of the outside world.
Summary
Juliette stands alone in an airlock wearing a suit marked with numbers on its pockets. Looking down through her visor, she realizes the numbers are printed upside down so that she, not anyone else, can read them.
Behind Juliette, the inner door is sealed. In front of her, another door waits to be opened: the forbidden door leading outside. Suspended between the two barriers, Juliette feels trapped and disoriented in the sealed chamber, surrounded by brightly colored pipes and plastic-wrapped surfaces.
As argon hisses into the room and pressure builds, the environment physically tightens around Juliette and her suit, signaling that the final moment is approaching. While she waits, Juliette reflects on how improbable this path has been: she was once only a mechanic from the deep levels who cared little about the outside world and expected a quiet life fixing broken machines, yet she has somehow been brought to this threshold.
