Chapter 60: Silo 18
Overview
Lukas's confinement in the server room becomes more psychologically fraught as forbidden books and Juliette's calls push him to question the world Bernard has built around him. Peter Billings reveals that IT is preparing a major assault on Mechanical, raising the stakes in Silo 18's civil conflict. Juliette urges Lukas to choose a side and act, but his fear and guilt over past violence show how paralyzed he remains.
Summary
Lukas, still hidden in Silo 18's server room, reads an old psychology book about how quickly groups can turn violent. The forbidden histories and scientific texts he has been consuming leave him disoriented and awed by the scale of the lost world, while his isolated routine of sleeping, eating, and reading makes time feel meaningless. When the red warning lights begin flashing, Lukas realizes he has company.
Peter Billings arrives with Lukas's dinner and traps him in conversation instead of letting him retreat. Peter notices Lukas's eagerness to avoid him, questions what Lukas does all day, and then reveals an important development in the conflict below: Sims and his men are preparing to blow apart Mechanical's barricade, which Peter expects will end the rebellion within days. Peter also says Bernard has been acting strangely and mentions that Bernard may bring Lukas's mother up to visit, implying that Lukas's confinement will continue.
When a server buzz signals an incoming call, Lukas uses the excuse of work to escape Peter and slips to the hidden radio. Juliette answers from Silo 17. Lukas warns her not to call so recklessly when Bernard is nearby, but Juliette dismisses Bernard's anger and bitterly jokes that Lukas could solve the problem by killing Bernard. Lukas recoils from the suggestion, insists he does not want to kill anyone, and admits that he feels trapped in confusion, surrounded by information but understanding very little.
The conversation turns more serious when Juliette asks Lukas to trust that she was wrongly exiled and that Bernard is the true danger. Juliette argues that Lukas is in a position to help and that people do not choose where fate puts them, only how they act afterward. Lukas resists her pressure and abruptly ends the exchange, while Juliette says she is about to test her modified suit and may be unreachable for a while. After disconnecting, Lukas is left alone with crushing guilt as he remembers the white-haired woman he shot during the uprising and realizes how deeply he has already implicated himself.
