Juliette wakes after an uncertain stretch of sleep in the abandoned silo and continues descending, drawn by the smell of rot from the farm levels. On the hydroponic floor, she hears a motor for the first time since entering the silo, which tells her some systems are still working. She leaves her knife propping the stairwell door open, slips inside, and finds the hydroponic gardens dead but the pipes still full of water.

Because thirst and survival now matter more than revulsion, Juliette drinks the stale, organic-tasting water from the irrigation pipes. The discovery changes her outlook: with water available, she may be able to stay alive long enough to learn more about the silo. She breaks off a capped section of pipe to use as a flask, fills it, rinses herself cautiously because she still fears outside contamination, and heads farther down toward the source of the stronger smell.

On the dirt-farm level, Juliette finds a very different scene. The vegetation is still alive, a pump is running, water is dripping, flies are buzzing, and crops are growing among the rot. That evidence makes her revise her sense of the silo’s timeline; the place may not have been dead nearly as long as she assumed. She finds a tomato and bites into it, confirming that food as well as water may be available.

Then the stairwell door suddenly slams shut, plunging the room into darkness and cutting off the light from outside. Juliette panics, briefly mistakes a turnstile for an attacker, and retreats toward the exit, only to discover that both her knife and her water flask are gone. As she realizes the door did not close by accident, she hears footsteps running down the stairwell below, revealing that someone else is alive in the supposedly dead silo and has been near her without being seen.
