Chapter 24
Overview
Juliette races to IT to meet Scottie and learns that the files tied to Allison and Holston contain a program capable of creating false images for a display. The discovery suggests that the silo’s view of the outside may be manufactured rather than real, giving Juliette a possible explanation for the deadly investigations before her own. Scottie’s panic and his decision to erase his copies show how dangerous this knowledge is becoming.
Summary
Juliette hurries thirty-four levels down to IT after Scottie’s urgent message, thinking about how badly the sheriff’s office is positioned for fast response. On the stairs she nearly collides with Lukas, who is pleased to see her until he realizes she is rushing elsewhere. Juliette keeps going, focused on finding Scottie.
At IT, Juliette notices a late-night meeting that seems to include Bernard, then tries to pass through the security gate. When her badge is denied and a young IT worker stalls her with rules about appointments, Juliette uses her authority and physical intimidation to force access. After getting directions, she makes her way to Scottie’s office.
Scottie lets Juliette in and immediately worries about whether anyone saw her enter. He is terrified by the material Juliette had Knox send to him from Mechanical and explains that he printed it only so he could delete the wire. Juliette realizes Scottie understands the coded files and presses him to explain, insisting that as sheriff she needs the truth.
Scottie finally reveals that the recovered data is a computer program for a display system. He says it is far too complex to simply pass along an image from outside sensors; instead, it is designed to generate images, with enough sophistication to create realistic scenes. In plain terms, Scottie tells Juliette the program could make a screen like the cafeteria wall display show any view at all.
This possibility shocks Juliette and reframes Allison and Holston’s investigations. She realizes the outside view seen in the silo may be fabricated, and that discovering this could explain the chain of fear, secrecy, and cleanings surrounding them. Before Juliette leaves, Scottie says he has deleted his copies, urges her to destroy the evidence, and asks for help transferring back to Mechanical because he no longer feels safe in IT.
