Chapter 8
Overview
The morning after Holston's death, Mayor Jahns forces herself from private grief into the urgent task of choosing a new sheriff. Deputy Marnes identifies Juliette from Mechanical as the strongest candidate, and Jahns decides to break with routine by traveling down to meet Juliette in person. The decision matters both politically and personally: it may shape the silo's next lawkeeper, and it reveals how deeply Holston's death has unsettled the leaders at the top.
Summary
On the morning after Holston's cleaning, Mayor Jahns sits in the cafeteria knitting and looking out at the dead landscape. Her thoughts keep turning to age, death, and the long history buried beneath the silo's ordinary objects and routines. Watching dust move across the hill where Holston's body lies, Jahns feels again how painful the cleanings are for her to witness, especially when the sensors begin to cloud and undo the sacrifice that was meant to clear them.
Deputy Marnes brings Jahns three folders for possible replacements for sheriff. Jahns briefly suggests promoting Marnes, but Marnes refuses, saying he has been a deputy too long to become anything else. As they review the candidates, Marnes strongly recommends Juliette, called Jules, a Mechanical shift foreman from the down deep who impressed both Marnes and Holston during an earlier death investigation. Jahns studies Juliette's record, notes her independence and good work history, and hears Marnes dismiss the other candidates as weaker options.
While they are talking, a swirl of dust strikes the exterior sensors and briefly darkens the cafeteria, leaving the view dingier again. The moment sharpens Jahns's bitterness about what the world outside forces people in the silo to do. Rather than summon Juliette up for a standard interview, Jahns decides she and Marnes will travel down quietly to meet Juliette where she lives and works. Jahns frames the trip as more than official business: she wants to see her people directly and also needs a personal escape from the top of the silo and from the grief surrounding Holston's death.
After breakfast, Jahns and Marnes meet in Holston's old office to prepare. They leave Terry, an IT security worker, in charge, with Marcha, a teenage IT apprentice, behind him. As Jahns and Marnes pass through the crowded cafeteria, they move through the noisy celebration that always follows a cleaning, with residents treating the trip as a goodwill visit or campaign gesture. Marnes admits he wants to get away because Holston's absence still makes the office unbearable, and Jahns silently reflects on the crushing responsibility of keeping the silo together. By the time they reach the stairwell, Jahns is convinced that this is not a moment for speeches or celebration, but for sober recognition of how fragile their ordered world really is.
