This chapter is a childhood flashback. Five-year-old Juliette makes a long trip down the silo with her parents, mostly half-asleep in their arms. The journey feels endless to her, but her parents treat it as important, and they finally bring her to level 100 in the Down Deep.

In the bazaar, Juliette stays close to her father because the crowds, animals, and maze of stalls overwhelm her. Her parents buy food, show her the market, and then lead her through a gate into a theater. Juliette is fascinated by the jugglers and comic performers on the stage, far more than by the serious play that follows.

During the performance, Juliette loses interest and falls asleep. When the play ends, her parents take her down to the stage instead of leaving. They wait to speak with the actress who played Juliette, revealing that Juliette's parents had seen this same play years earlier while they were courting and chose the name Juliette from it for their first daughter.

The actress warmly meets the child and, after hearing that Juliette is learning, gives her a copy of the script marked with handwritten notes. Juliette notices that her own name appears throughout the pages and finally understands why her parents made the trip. She thanks the actress and, with childlike honesty, apologizes for having fallen asleep during the play.
