Locked in the server room, Lukas balances on a trash can and sniffs the air vent, uneasy and restless. Bernard enters, dismisses Lukas's concern about a smoky smell, gives him letters from his mother, and casually discusses post-revolt staffing changes, including moving farmers into Mechanical and possibly putting Sammi in charge there. Lukas hides his real goal: he wants to leave confinement, but first he decides to test what Bernard will admit.

Lukas asks for lighter reading, then steers the conversation toward an old investigation file on George Wilkins. Bernard reacts sharply as soon as Lukas names George, confirming the subject is sensitive. Pressed further, Bernard explains that George had been spreading ideas about expanding the silo downward after lateral digging was forbidden, and Bernard treats those ideas as the beginnings of insurrection rather than harmless engineering.

The conversation turns openly brutal. Bernard says George was killed because men like him are "a virus," and he argues that IT must remove dangerous thinkers before their ideas spread. Bernard claims cleanings only work on people who already want to believe in the false outside world, while others must be dealt with in different ways; he even frames the current uprising as a preventable outbreak that should have been stopped sooner. As Bernard speaks, Lukas realizes Juliette's influence has changed him too, and he sees more clearly that Bernard's system depends on murder, manipulation, and forced forgetting.

After Bernard insists that the silo will recover from the rebellion just as it did after the last insurrection, Lukas asks the question he truly cares about: whether Bernard himself killed George Wilkins. Bernard dodges, then shifts the pressure onto Lukas, testing whether Lukas still accepts the future role Bernard has planned for him. Shaken and frightened, Lukas abandons caution and admits what he really wants: he wants out of the room and wants Bernard to let him leave.

Bernard seizes on Lukas's wording and makes him repeat it. With tears in his eyes but no mercy in his actions, Bernard raises his radio and calls Sheriff Billings, announcing that Lukas Kyle says he wants "out." Because "wanting out" is treated as a capital offense in the silo, Bernard turns Lukas's plea for release from confinement into what appears to be a death sentence.
