Chapter 26
Contains spoilersOverview
Sarah Morgan receives an uninvited visit from her former mother-in-law, Eleanor Morgan, who criticizes Sarah’s past representation of Adam and her current life. Eleanor demands updates on Adam’s appeal, disparages Sarah’s daughter Summer, and serves notice of an impending defamation lawsuit. The tense encounter ends with Eleanor leaving after confirming she will formally file suit.
Summary
Sarah Morgan reluctantly lets Eleanor Morgan into her home, noting Eleanor’s frailty and hostility. In the kitchen, Eleanor immediately belittled Sarah’s home and coffee, and made a cutting remark about Alejandro when he briefly appeared and then stepped outside. Sarah pressed Eleanor to state her purpose.
Eleanor condemned Sarah’s handling of Adam Morgan’s case, particularly the recent revelation that former sheriff Ryan Stevens had been intimate with Kelly Summers, saying it should have been uncovered at trial. Sarah explained she has filed an appeal based on concealed exculpatory evidence and corruption, and that the process has been expedited; if a retrial occurs, the Morgan Foundation will handle it. Eleanor fixated on Adam’s innocence and death, and rebuffed Sarah’s explanations.
Summer entered, reminding Sarah of a prior plan to attend a movie with a friend under a parent’s supervision; Sarah allowed it and gave Summer money. Eleanor’s demeanor toward Summer was cold, and after Summer left, Eleanor pressed Sarah about Summer’s paternity and whether Sarah ever loved Adam. She also mocked the name “Summer.” Sarah inwardly reflected that she named her daughter to honor Kelly Summers and her unborn child.
Finally, Eleanor produced a manila envelope and told Sarah she was suing her for defamation over statements about Eleanor’s mental state, saying it could affect Eleanor’s civil lawsuit against the Prince William County Sheriff’s Office. Eleanor acknowledged she could not personally serve Sarah but said formal service would follow.
Eleanor departed, satisfied to have warned Sarah, and Sarah chose not to escalate the confrontation, letting Eleanor have the last word.
