Chapter 14
Contains spoilersOverview
Bob Miller is summoned to the Prince William County Sheriff’s Office expecting questions about Kelly Summers but is blindsided when Sheriff Hudson and Chief Deputy Pam Olson question him about missing woman Stacy Howard. Under pressure, Bob admits to a one-night stand with Stacy weeks earlier, but denies any recent contact. Presented with texts naming him as Stacy’s planned Monday-night date, Bob provides a thin alibi and leaves as the clear prime suspect.
Summary
Bob Miller arrives at the sheriff’s office anticipating follow-up on the reopened Kelly Summers case. Sheriff Mason Hudson and Chief Deputy Pam Olson enter and, after Bob volunteers the Summers angle, they reveal the interview is about something else. Hudson slides Bob a photo of a red-haired woman; Bob initially denies recognizing her.
Pressed by Olson, Bob notices the woman’s silver S-necklace and recalls a drunken one-night stand. He admits to sleeping with the woman but claims not to know her beyond that and says it happened weeks ago. Olson identifies the woman as Stacy Howard and asks when Bob last had contact with her. Bob insists it was three weeks earlier.
Olson produces a screenshot of texts between Stacy and her roommate, Deena Walsh, from Monday night in which Stacy says she is meeting “the lawyer,” naming Bob Miller. The officers inform Bob that Deena filed a missing person report and that Stacy has been missing for three days. Hudson asks for Bob’s whereabouts on Monday; Bob says he picked up his daughter, Summer, around seven, had dinner with Summer and his wife Sarah at their Lake Manassas home around seven-thirty, then drove alone back to his D.C. place and went to bed.
Olson challenges the lack of independent verification of Bob’s time after leaving his family. Hudson asks whether Sarah knows about the affair; Bob replies that she knows and has filed for divorce. Bob interprets the situation as Sarah manipulating events against him, but offers no evidence of that to the officers.
Bob asks to leave, and Hudson allows it, but warns him not to leave town. Bob exits, realizing the implication: he is their top suspect in Stacy Howard’s disappearance.
