Chapter 41
Contains spoilersOverview
Sheriff Marcus Hudson receives an anonymously delivered package addressed to him. Inside is a bloodied knife and a note claiming the knife belongs to Sarah Morgan and that testing the blood will reveal what it was last used for. Hudson orders the knife sent to the lab, recognizing the potential implications for ongoing cases.
Summary
Chief Deputy Pam Olson brings a carefully wrapped package into Sheriff Marcus Hudson’s office, explaining it was left in the station’s anonymous drop box. As they discuss the ongoing search for Scott Summers, Hudson notes that the Bureau of Criminal Investigation has taken over, issued an APB, and circulated Scott’s photo to surrounding states. He adds that their department will assist as needed but is already occupied with current cases.
Hudson examines the package, which bears no address, only “Attn: Sheriff Hudson.” Concerned about potential danger, he asks if it is safe to open. Olson confirms it was X-rayed and that she knows the object type but not its significance.
Hudson dons gloves, unties the twine, and opens the box. Inside is a cloth bag with a note attached. He reads the note aloud: “This belongs to Sarah Morgan. Test the blood, and you’ll find out what it was last used for.”
Hudson removes a knife with a six-inch blade that appears to be covered in dried blood. He immediately returns it to the bag and instructs Olson to rush it to the lab for testing.
As Olson leaves, she asks what he thinks it means. Hudson acknowledges the uncertainty, stating it could mean nothing or everything, indicating the knife could be pivotal evidence or a misdirection in their investigations.
