Chapter 52
Contains spoilersOverview
Sheriff Marcus Hudson reviews forensics confirming Bob Miller’s fingerprints on the knife from his safe and Kelly Summers’s blood on it, apparently solving the old murder. Hudson and Chief Deputy Pam Olson debate whether Sarah Morgan could be involved, but find no evidence tying her to the crimes. They conclude Bob likely acted alone in the present cases, presume Carissa Brooks is dead based on blood loss, and prepare a press statement. Amid concerns about fugitive Scott Summers, Hudson and Olson affirm their relationship before Hudson drafts his public briefing.
Summary
Marcus Hudson throws a lab report on his desk and tells Pam Olson that Bob Miller’s fingerprints were found on the knife recovered from Bob’s safe, and the blood on it matched Kelly Summers. Olson reads the report and calls it incredible, while Hudson notes how suspiciously convenient it seems that the long-missing murder weapon appeared in Bob’s safe after Bob’s death.
They discuss additional forensic findings: a second blood pool in the farmhouse basement matches blood from Carissa Brooks’s salon. Forensics estimate about five pints of blood across the two scenes, leading Hudson and Olson to presume Carissa is dead. The neat alignment of evidence makes Hudson uneasy, but it also appears to close multiple cases.
Olson raises the possibility that Bob did not act alone and suggests Sarah Morgan’s potential involvement, noting that Sarah married Bob shortly after Adam Morgan’s execution and that Sarah had defended Adam. Hudson questions the plausibility of a long-running conspiracy in which Sarah and Bob killed Kelly, framed Adam, then later turned on each other, calling it far-fetched and risky.
They weigh the lack of direct evidence against Sarah. Olson points out the anonymous knife delivered to the sheriff’s office that looked identical to the real murder weapon, but Hudson argues it is merely bizarre without evidentiary value and likely another of Bob’s schemes to frame Sarah, given Bob would know what the real knife looked like.
Hudson checks the time and prepares to brief the press on the developments, believing the media will seize on the dramatic connections between recent events and the decade-old murder. Olson brings up Scott Summers, who remains at large after killing Ryan Stevens, but Hudson notes the federal authorities have taken over that case and it is no longer theirs to pursue.
Although Olson worries about Scott remaining free, Hudson reassures her that Scott is unlikely to be a general threat unless he believes someone else was involved in Kelly’s death. Before Olson leaves, the two exchange “I love you.” Hudson then turns to his computer and begins drafting a statement for the press, promising a strange but coherent narrative tying the past and present cases together.
