Overview

Sarah Morgan attends a divorce negotiation with her husband, Bob, after discovering his infidelity. Bob, guided by his lawyer Brad, pushes for reconciliation, while Sarah, represented by Jess, refuses and demands custody and control over shared interests. The meeting ends without agreement, and Sarah firmly rebuffs Bob’s private plea in the hallway. The chapter closes with Sarah reflecting on trust, motherhood, and her past marriage to Adam.

Summary

Sarah Morgan sits across from her husband, Bob, at a sparsely populated conference room table during a divorce negotiation. Bob’s lawyer, Brad, opens by saying Bob wants reconciliation, while Sarah’s lawyer, Jess, immediately rejects the idea. Bob claims his infidelity happened only once and begs for forgiveness, but Sarah, internally noting his remorse comes only after being caught, remains unmoved.

Brad presents Bob’s willingness to attend counseling, calling his actions a single lapse in judgment. Jess slides over Sarah’s demands, which include Bob giving up custody of his daughter and relinquishing his role and stake in the Morgan Foundation. Bob reacts angrily and refuses, and Brad specifically rejects the custody and foundation terms.

Bob appeals directly to Sarah, saying he won’t give up on their marriage. Sarah refuses to engage, and Jess reiterates that Sarah has no interest in reconciliation. After a hushed strategy talk with Brad, he suggests reconvening later, but Jess stresses that the purpose is to settle assets and custody quickly and privately, warning they will go to court if necessary.

Sarah rises to leave as Brad closes the meeting. In the hallway, Bob follows and grabs Sarah’s shoulder, pleading with her not to do this. Sarah tells him he is lucky that divorce is the worst consequence he will face, reminding him she does not make threats. She walks away to the elevator despite his repeated calls.

While waiting and descending in the elevator, Sarah reflects that she wanted a quiet and swift divorce for the sake of their daughter, Summer, who does not yet know. She feels Bob is fighting every step because he cannot accept the end of their marriage, but she insists trust, once broken, cannot be rebuilt without harm.

As the elevator doors close on Bob watching her, Sarah notes a familiar glimmer in his expression that she cannot place. She considers how motherhood changed her and contrasts this marriage with her first marriage to Adam, thinking that if she and Adam had had children, things might have been different.
