Chapter 18
Contains spoilersOverview
Bob Miller attends a Morgan Foundation board meeting while anxiously awaiting investigative updates on missing woman Stacy Howard. He recalls Stacy’s theft and extortion after their one-night stand, then learns she previously blackmailed a congressman and appears on the Foundation’s external payroll. Consumed by suspicion that Sarah Morgan is plotting against him, Bob fantasizes about murdering her, then snaps back to reality and pointedly votes against her. The chapter escalates Bob’s paranoia and hostility toward Sarah and ties Stacy to the Foundation.
Summary
Bob Miller sits through a Morgan Foundation quarterly board meeting, distracted as he waits for Brad to deliver research on Stacy Howard. He reflects that Sarah Morgan was right that he knows almost nothing about Stacy, aside from his own experience: after they slept together, Stacy stole his Rolex and cash, then tried to extort him by threatening to tell Sarah. Bob ignored her demands because Sarah learned of the affair from someone at his firm the next day.
During the meeting, Anne facilitates votes; Bob, inattentive, votes against an initiative to donate premium feminine hygiene products to women’s prisons, making him the lone dissenter. The board includes a prison warden, Kendall from a PR firm, Corey, a DC lobbyist, and other community figures. An update on “Case Fifty, Alejandro Perez” credits Bob for the nomination and notes Alejandro’s apartment, a clean drug test, a temp job, and an incident where Alejandro shielded Sarah from reporters. Kendall outlines a media strategy to relabel “felon” and build public support, while Corey reports progress on a Senate bill to increase incentives for hiring people with felony records, potentially doubling the WOTC and lowering healthcare premiums.
Bob’s phone finally buzzes with Brad’s messages. Brad reports that Stacy was previously charged with extortion for blackmailing a sitting congressman, though the record is sealed. When pressed, Brad adds a major concern: Stacy appears on the Morgan Foundation’s external payroll as a contractor, with purpose unclear.
Interpreting this as evidence that Sarah is plotting against him, Bob’s rage spikes. He experiences a vivid, violent fantasy in which he leaps over the table and murders Sarah with a ballpoint pen, imagining repeatedly stabbing her in the eye and face while the room screams.
Bob then snaps back to reality in the conference room, where he is still seated, having cracked a pen in his fist and spilled red ink on the table. Sarah, calm but watchful, asks for his vote on the next item, her thumb raised in approval. Bob rotates his ink-stained hand into a thumbs-down, signaling defiance and mentally declaring that Sarah has “met her match.”
