Chapter 50
Contains spoilersOverview
In a flashback set ten hours earlier, Sarah Morgan confronts Alejandro at gunpoint and forces him to admit Bob hired him to kill her. Under threat, Alejandro reveals Bob previously hired him about fifteen years ago to kill Jenna Way, but Alejandro accidentally killed Bob’s brother Greg Way instead and framed Jenna. Sarah flips Alejandro to her side with a matching payment, learns Bob has been tracking her car, and then has sex with Alejandro after disarming him.
Summary
The chapter opens with Sarah holding a gun to Alejandro’s head while Alejandro has a gun pressed to her abdomen. Sarah demands the truth about his identity and motives, having suspected since meeting him that his background was fabricated and that Bob’s endorsement was unusual and suspicious. Alejandro admits Bob hired him to kill Sarah, initially to surveil her and then, as of the prior day, to murder her as part of unspecified “other plans.”
Pressed further, Alejandro confirms he has known Bob a long time and had previously done jobs for him. He reveals that nearly fifteen years earlier Bob hired him to kill Jenna Way because Jenna knew about Bob’s criminal dealings and threatened to go to authorities. Alejandro recounts that during the attempted hit he mistakenly confronted Greg Way, Bob’s brother, when a jammed gun alerted Greg, leading to a struggle in which Alejandro fatally stabbed Greg and staged the scene to incriminate Jenna. Alejandro says Bob never knew what actually happened and believed Jenna killed Greg when the evidence pointed to her.
Sarah reacts with dark amusement that Bob effectively caused his own brother’s death. She confirms she herself killed Jenna twelve years ago in the same room, showing Alejandro she is more dangerous than he realized. Sarah then negotiates with Alejandro, offering to pay him the same amount Bob promised—$250,000—to not kill her and to cooperate.
Recognizing he has no leverage, Alejandro disarms and agrees. He also volunteers that Bob had him install a tracker on Sarah’s car and has been monitoring her movements for weeks; Sarah says she already knew. With the immediate threat neutralized and the power dynamic reversed, the scene ends with Sarah and Alejandro having sex, signaling a volatile alliance.
