Chapter 21
Contains spoilersOverview
Sarah Morgan makes breakfast for her daughter Summer and prepares for Summer's overnight visit with Bob. Summer is startled by Alejandro, the ex-con Sarah hired to repair the deck, prompting Sarah to introduce him. After Summer leaves to get ready, Sarah brings Alejandro food and they have a candid conversation about prison, pasts, and survival, revealing parallels in their upbringings.
Summary
Sarah cooked breakfast for Summer while worrying about the impact of the separation on their daughter and resolving to keep her safe. Summer rushed in, excited and sleepy, and Sarah fed her bacon, toast, and quiche, fielding questions about tattoos and ear piercing. When Summer spotted a man outside, Sarah explained it was Alejandro, the worker she hired to fix their deck.
Sarah gently probed Summer about her upcoming overnight in Washington, DC with Bob. Summer admitted she wished Sarah were coming, and Sarah reassured her while privately acknowledging their strained situation and her hope that Bob would give Summer a good night despite his recent threat. Sarah repeatedly watched Alejandro working, uncertain whether having him around was wise given his criminal record.
After Summer finished eating and went to shower and pack, Sarah continued observing Alejandro’s work and decided to bring him a plate of food and orange juice. Alejandro gratefully accepted and ate quickly, explaining that in his past you ate fast or you did not eat. Sarah asked what prison was like, and Alejandro stated he never wanted to go back. He said he should finish the deck in a few days, and Sarah said there was no rush.
Sarah reflected on choice and consequence, thinking of Adam and how his fate was shaped by her actions. Alejandro said he had not really had a choice the first time he went to prison, describing an absent father, a mother consumed by addiction, and his search for belonging that led him into a gang. His disclosure prompted Sarah to recall her own traumatic childhood, including her mother’s addiction, motel living, and Sarah fending off predatory men to survive.
They acknowledged the similarity of their paths in different forms. When Alejandro asked what Sarah had fallen into, Sarah answered, “Survival,” and he understood without further explanation. The scene closed with a tacit recognition of their shared resilience and complicated histories.
