Chapter 27
Contains spoilersOverview
Bob Miller takes a nighttime call from his attorney, Brad Watson, and insists that Sarah Morgan engineered his affair with missing woman Stacy Howard, a theory Brad strongly rejects. Bob then goes to an after-hours haircut with his stylist Carissa, where she seems anxious and accidentally nicks his neck with a straight razor, leading to a brief scare and awkward aftermath.
Summary
Walking through downtown Manassas at night, Bob Miller answers a call from his lawyer, Brad Watson. Bob vents that Sarah is divorcing him, he risks losing custody of Summer, and Stacy Howard has disappeared. Brad urges Bob to stay calm for the custody case and warns that any contact with Stacy would be disastrous for his position.
Bob insists he needs to find Stacy because he believes Sarah hired Stacy to seduce him and then paid her to vanish. Brad challenges the logic, pointing out that Sarah filed for divorce because of the affair and would have no reason to orchestrate the cheating if her goal was custody. Brad accuses Bob of avoiding responsibility for his mistake and warns that Sarah can get full custody if Bob does not regain focus.
Bob ends the call and arrives late to an after-hours appointment at Cuts by Carissa. Carissa lets him in, locks the door, and begins his haircut routine, engaging in small talk about Sarah and Summer. Bob notes Carissa’s anxious behavior as she repeatedly checks the front and back entrances and glances toward her office and watch.
During a hair wash, Bob briefly dozes off. Back in the chair, Carissa offers a straight razor shave. While shaving, she accidentally cuts Bob’s neck. Blood runs down his neck and onto the cape and clothing, prompting Bob to demand a towel and something cold.
Carissa rushes to her office and returns with a towel and a cold can of sparkling water to press against the wound. She appears rattled and apologetic. After she produces a first aid kit, Bob applies two bandages, and Carissa, near tears, offers to comp the service.
Bob decides to continue the haircut, joking about keeping scissors away from his neck to ease the tension. He insists on paying for the haircut if Carissa pays for his dry cleaning, which she hesitantly accepts. Bob privately wonders why she hesitated and remains aware of her nervous demeanor.
