Summary
Blake and Krista cuddled on the sofa during a thunderstorm, enjoying a movie and increased intimacy since Blake started his low-paid temp job that might become permanent. As they began kissing and undressing, the front door locks turned and Blake pulled away, irritated by the constraints of having a tenant.
Whitney entered drenched from the rain, teased that she might have interrupted them, and displayed a cold, sarcastic tone that reflected the lingering tension since Blake’s critical visit to her at the diner. Krista, unaware of the full tension, offered popcorn, which Whitney brushed off sardonically before heading to the kitchen to heat her dinner.
Blake followed under the pretense of refilling his water, intending to speak with Whitney privately. In the kitchen, Whitney, focused on her reheating food, made a barbed remark about Blake and Krista having sex on the couch. When Blake asserted it was his house and she was just a renter, Whitney retorted that he had made that clear and jabbed about using the TV without notice.
Attempting a truce, Blake suggested starting fresh and apologized for upsetting her. Whitney rejected the overture, calling him dense and then recounting how she had previously praised him as smart, charismatic, and good-looking when he was anxious about his job. She retracted those compliments, claiming his success came from being a self-absorbed, terrible person beneath a good-guy veneer.
Whitney brushed past Blake after telling him to enjoy the movie with Krista and warning that Krista might figure out who he really was, adding she hoped Krista would for her own sake. Whitney then stomped upstairs and slammed her door.
Left alone, Blake questioned whether he deserved the tirade for confronting her at the diner and insisted to himself he was not an asshole, acknowledging he had done some bad things but rationalizing them as part of being competitive in his former job. He concluded he needed to keep a close eye on Whitney.
