Chapter 6
Contains spoilersOverview
Krista and Blake interview a new prospective tenant, Whitney Cross, who appears normal, friendly, and enthusiastic about the room. They show her the house, and despite Blake’s private misgivings about renting to anyone and noticing Whitney’s attractiveness, they offer her the room pending standard checks. Whitney agrees but briefly hesitates when asked for a Social Security number and reference before assuring them she can provide both. Blake remains uneasy even as the plan moves forward.
Summary
Krista answers the door to meet Whitney Cross, a seemingly normal woman around thirty, casually dressed and polite. Whitney explains she is a waitress at Cosmo’s Diner, found their ad there, and needs a place quickly because her lease ended. Krista manages the conversation smoothly, especially when Blake awkwardly admits he is between jobs, and offers Whitney homemade cookies during the tour.
The three tour the first floor, where Whitney responds positively, even admiring their fish, Goldy. In the kitchen, Whitney expresses excitement about having a dishwasher, and she and Krista laugh at Blake’s surprise that some apartments lack one. Whitney continues to make a good impression as they move through the home.
Upstairs, Whitney is thrilled by the washer and dryer, recounting frustrations with laundromats. Blake reflects on sharing the machines and on the loss of the future he envisioned for the extra rooms, now being rented to cover the mortgage after his job loss. They view the shared bathroom and then head to the top floor, which includes a furnished guest room and open space.
In the furnished bedroom, Whitney says she prefers it over the unfurnished second-floor room because she has no furniture of her own. Blake privately notes Whitney’s attractiveness and briefly wonders if Krista would be concerned, but Krista appears trusting. Whitney declares strong interest in moving in and asks if others are being considered.
Weighing their financial need against his reluctance to rent to anyone, Blake nods to Krista to proceed. Krista offers Whitney the room, and Whitney eagerly offers to pay first month’s rent and a security deposit immediately. Blake insists on due diligence first: a Social Security number for a credit check and at least one reference.
Whitney’s smile drops momentarily at the request, which triggers Blake’s suspicion, but she quickly recovers and agrees to provide whatever is needed, expressing eagerness to move in soon. The meeting ends with a tentative agreement pending checks, while Blake retains an uneasy feeling about Whitney despite her apparent suitability.
