Chapter 18
Contains spoilersOverview
Blake, working as a temp, does a Starbucks coffee run and runs into Stacie, the secretary from his former firm, forcing him to posture about his prospects. Back at the office, his manager Kenny confronts him after calling Blake's former employer and believing Wayne Vincent's version that Blake stole from the company. Kenny threatens Blake's future prospects, rejects his coffee for a replacement, and Blake's stress and rash worsen.
Summary
Blake describes his routine temp duty of collecting Starbucks orders, noting he has become adept at carrying multiple drink trays. While waiting in line, he scratches at a returning skin rash that had previously improved after he cleaned the washing machine; he also reflects that the apartment still smells of rot and remains overrun with fruit flies despite a working trap.
At Starbucks, Blake is recognized by Stacie, the secretary for his former boss who fired him. She probes about his job and his engagement to Krista, and Blake downplays his situation, implying he is doing well. After she departs, Blake returns to the office without spilling any drinks.
Blake delivers Kenny’s oat milk mocha latte and hopes for a path to a permanent role after recently impressing Kenny with a meeting suggestion. Instead, Kenny coolly questions Blake about prior office errands and then reveals he contacted Coble & Roy after seeing it on Blake’s CV.
Kenny says Wayne Vincent told him Blake stole from the company and condemns Blake as a thief. Blake insists it was a misunderstanding and appeals to “innocent until proven guilty,” which Kenny dismisses as irrelevant outside court. Kenny complains his coffee tastes bad, orders Blake to exchange it, and warns that if Blake steals from his current company, he will end Blake’s employability, even with temp agencies.
Blake, unable to risk losing the temp job, takes the coffee to exchange it despite resentment. Before leaving, he ducks into the restroom and scratches his chest intensely until he bleeds, showing the toll of the stress and lingering rash.
