Chapter 27
Contains spoilersOverview
Blake and Krista trace Blake’s missing phone to Whitney’s bed, deepening Krista’s suspicions that Blake is cheating. Finding a tube of lipstick matching the stain on Blake’s collar and a jug of bleach in their closet pushes Krista to leave to stay with friends, despite Blake’s insistence that Whitney is framing him. After Krista departs by taxi, Blake snaps and threatens their neighbor Mr. Zimmerly by hurling a trash can, revealing his escalating volatility and fixation on Whitney.
Summary
Blake and Krista follow the ringing of Blake’s phone to the third floor and, despite Krista’s hesitation, enter Whitney’s room. The phone is discovered under Whitney’s crumpled bedcovers, confirming it had been in her bed. Krista also finds a white lipstick tube, which Blake recognizes as the exact shade that previously appeared on his shirt collar.
Confronted with the phone and lipstick, Krista accuses Blake of possibly sleeping with Whitney. Blake denies any affair and claims Whitney is setting him up, but he cannot explain her motive. Krista, hurt and uncertain, notes Blake’s recent erratic behavior and suggests they spend time apart.
Back in their bedroom, Krista begins packing a suitcase. She discovers a jug of bleach in their closet, which, combined with Blake’s earlier allegations about Goldy’s death by bleach, makes her suspect Blake may have killed the fish to frame Whitney. Blake vehemently denies it and protests that Whitney put the rotten fruit in the cabinet, poisoned Goldy, and planted the bleach, but Krista cites his months of strange conduct, sleep-talking (sometimes saying Whitney’s name), and the scandal at his former company as reasons she no longer trusts him.
Krista decides to leave for a few days to stay with Becky and Malcolm. Blake briefly blocks the door, then, disturbed by his own impulse, steps aside. Krista departs, hailing a taxi and leaving without further discussion, and Blake vows to win her back.
Outside, Mr. Zimmerly confronts Blake about leaving trash cans out for two days. Already on edge, Blake loses his temper and hurls a trash can in Zimmerly’s direction, missing on purpose but frightening the elderly neighbor into retreating. Onlookers gather, and Blake returns inside, acknowledging he did not want to hurt Zimmerly but harboring violent thoughts toward Whitney.
