Chapter 56
Contains spoilersOverview
Krista (the narrator) stages concern about Blake’s mental decline during a call with Becky when Amanda discovers rotting, maggot-covered fruit on her bed. Krista uses the crisis to extract Amanda’s true backstory and to propose that she and Amanda get an apartment together, keeping Amanda from leaving prematurely. The chapter ends with Krista ominously bidding farewell to the couple’s goldfish, Goldy, signaling her accelerated plan against Blake and their shared life.
Summary
Krista speaks with Becky in the living room about Blake’s worsening behavior, subtly encouraging Becky’s fears that Blake is dangerous while insisting she will be fine. Amanda arrives home exhausted, and moments later an ear-splitting scream from upstairs interrupts the call. Becky offers emergency help, but Krista hangs up and goes to investigate.
At Amanda’s door, Krista finds Amanda distraught; Amanda claims Blake threw rotting, maggot-covered fruit all over her bed. Krista expresses shock and sympathy, while internally noting Blake’s instability and the threat that Amanda might move out. Amanda says she has few resources and may have to leave, which alarms Krista because it would derail her plans.
Krista closes the door and confronts Amanda with knowledge of her true identity, calling her “Amanda.” When Amanda falters, Krista claims an IT friend confirmed the fake license and assures her she has told no one, prompting Amanda to confess. Amanda reveals she took out illicit loans to fund her mother’s cancer treatment, her mother died anyway, and to escape violent creditors she bought a new identity: the missing teenager Whitney Cross.
Krista hides her anger at the theft of her own identity and reassures Amanda that her secret is safe, praising her intentions toward her mother. She then shares her own “secret,” telling Amanda she is thinking about leaving Blake because he scares her. Krista says she needs time and money, and proposes that she and Amanda get an apartment together and split rent. Amanda brightens at the idea and agrees to start looking, suggesting cheaper options like Staten Island.
The women clean the mess in Amanda’s room together, with Krista fuming internally at Blake’s escalation. After the cleanup, Krista goes to the living room and reflects on Goldy, the goldfish she and Blake bought as a “starter pet” for a life they once envisioned. Concluding that their future is ending soon, Krista taps the bowl, says goodbye to Goldy, and blames Blake, implying that eliminating symbols of their shared life is part of her accelerated plan.
