Chapter 59
Contains spoilersOverview
Amanda calls Whitney to say Blake has become intolerable and she wants to move out. Whitney arranges to meet Amanda the next day, resolves that whatever will happen must happen then, and goes to Elijah’s apartment to collect forged identity documents and a vial of tetrodotoxin for her plan to kill Blake. Elijah urges her to walk away and professes his love; Whitney manipulates him, accepts the items, and leads him to the bedroom.
Summary
Whitney receives a phone call from Amanda after exiting the D train in Brooklyn. Amanda says Blake has been terrorizing her since Whitney moved out, and she wants to leave. Whitney suggests they meet at the brownstone the next evening, before Blake gets home, to discuss finding a new apartment together. Amanda, though hesitant, agrees.
Whitney reflects that her planted evidence at the brownstone has likely not been found yet. She notes she spilled Stacie Parker’s saved blood on the living room floorboards and left a grisly “gift” in the kitchen, confident these will implicate Blake, whom she plans to ensure won’t be alive to defend himself.
Determined that everything must happen the next day, Whitney walks to Elijah’s fourth-floor apartment to collect items he procured. She describes his neighborhood and apartment, noting its cleanliness and sparse furnishings.
Elijah meets Whitney, initially reluctant about what he is helping her do. He gives her a paper bag containing a forged passport and Social Security card for a new identity, and a small vial of clear liquid: tetrodotoxin, the blowfish poison Whitney selected because it is lethal but not instantaneous. Elijah warns that it will kill “him,” and Whitney confirms that is her intent.
Elijah pleads with Whitney to abandon her plan, arguing Blake is not worth it and that she can simply leave. Whitney, who internally notes Elijah does not know about her murders of Mr. Zimmerly and Stacie Parker, insists she cannot let go of Blake’s infidelity.
Elijah confesses his love, promising he would treat Whitney like a queen and never cheat. Whitney acknowledges his long-standing infatuation and, seeing his emotions, allows him to kiss her. The kiss moves Elijah; Whitney, calculating and in control, tells him, “Let’s go to the bedroom,” further manipulating him while keeping her focus on the next day’s plan.
