Overview

Unable to sleep after dinner at Becky and Malcolm’s, Blake goes downstairs and finds Whitney awake watching TV. They share cookies, talk about insomnia, his anxiety about starting a new job, and exchange mildly flirtatious banter. The tension eases as they watch a baking show together until Blake falls asleep on the sofa and wakes to find Whitney gone.

Summary

In the early hours after the dinner at Becky and Malcolm’s, Blake lies awake, replaying their judgments and feeling stung by Becky’s reaction to the psychic’s prediction. He gets out of bed so as not to wake Krista, who is sleeping soundly, and goes downstairs.

Blake finds Whitney awake in the living room with the TV on. He apologizes for startling her, fetches water and leftover oatmeal raisin cookies Krista baked, and they settle in together. Whitney praises Krista’s baking and thanks Blake for fixing her dresser drawer earlier, which had been falling off its rail.

They watch a baking show about hyperreal cakes and banter about guessing what is cake. Whitney mentions she can never sleep and that sleep aids have not helped, and Blake admits he is preoccupied with worries about the future. When Whitney suggests he might be anxious about marriage, Blake clarifies he is confident about marrying Krista but nervous about starting a new job on Monday.

Whitney reassures Blake, listing his positive traits and saying he seems like someone who lands on his feet. The compliments create flirtatious tension, amplified by Whitney’s skimpy pajamas and Blake’s self-consciousness, though Blake resolves internally that he would never cheat on Krista.

Whitney proposes to celebrate his first day by bringing cake from the diner, asking what kind he wants; Blake deflects with a joke that it should look like a piano, which breaks the tension. They continue watching the show, occasionally debating which items are cake, sharing cookies, and mostly sitting in companionable silence.

Blake eventually falls asleep on the sofa around three in the morning. When he wakes with a stiff neck, Whitney is no longer there.
