Chapter 26
Contains spoilersOverview
A week after Goldy’s death, Blake and Krista begin to reconnect, sharing a light evening and planning a fancy dinner date to repair their relationship. As Blake prepares for the night out, he misplaces his phone and, with Krista’s help, traces its ringtone. The sound leads not downstairs as expected, but to the third floor, introducing a new point of tension.
Summary
A week after the goldfish funeral, Blake describes lingering tension with Krista over his belief that Whitney killed Goldy. Over the last couple of days, Krista cooled off, and the couple shared a relaxed evening while Whitney worked late: they watched a movie, Krista baked cookies for the first time in weeks, and they had sex on the couch, which made Blake hopeful about their relationship.
On Saturday, Blake plans to take Krista to a fancy restaurant as a gesture to win her back fully. He goes for a hard run in Central Park, returns for a cold shower, and naps in front of the TV while snacking on Krista’s cookies. When Krista arrives home from the dry cleaner, she looks and smells freshly returned from work; their warm greeting reinforces Blake’s confidence that they can overcome recent conflict.
They agree to dress up and go out, but when Krista mentions having texted him, Blake realizes he never saw the message and cannot find his phone. He expected it to be downstairs where he had been watching TV and looking up restaurant reviews earlier, but it is not on the coffee table or in his pockets.
Upstairs in their bedroom, Blake and Krista search; he checks usual spots like the nightstand, dresser, and even strips the bed, but the phone is missing. Krista calls his number from her phone to help locate it.
They hear the ringtone faintly. Contrary to Blake’s assumption that it might be downstairs in the kitchen, the sound is not below them. Following the ringing out of the bedroom, Blake realizes the phone is coming from above—on the third floor—setting up a new mystery about how it got there.
