Chapter 31
Contains spoilersOverview
Blake, exhausted after discovering Mr. Zimmerly’s body, does laundry at a laundromat because he no longer trusts his machines and Krista is away. While searching for information on Whitney and finding nothing, he accidentally spills his detergent and discovers it contains a citrus scent. Realizing someone mixed limonene into his fragrance-free detergent, he concludes Whitney caused his rash and texts Krista, who does not respond.
Summary
Blake goes to a nearby laundromat since Krista is gone and he does not trust his home washer and dryer. He is sleep-deprived from nightmares about finding Mr. Zimmerly’s dead body and notes he did not see Whitney the previous night and is unsure if she was home.
To pass time, Blake searches online for Whitney again. He finds no social media and uses a facial recognition site with a cropped photo from her driver’s license, but the results are a series of unrelated women. He reflects that he does not recognize any of them and insists he never knew Whitney before she moved in.
Frustrated, Blake accidentally spills his laundry detergent. While cleaning it, he notices a strong citrus scent and identifies it as limonene. Checking the bottle of his usual sensitive, fragrance-free detergent, he confirms limonene is not listed and concludes someone mixed a limonene-containing detergent into his bottle without his knowledge.
Blake realizes this explains his persistent rash despite cleaning the washing machine. He angrily texts Krista that Whitney has been putting limonene in his detergent and that this caused the rash. He immediately regrets sending the message, especially given Krista’s suspicions about him and Whitney, and sees that Krista reads but does not respond.
Accepting that winning Krista back will be difficult, Blake resolves to focus on getting Whitney out of the house. He plans to buy new detergent and rewash his clothes, intending to clean up the mess and move forward.
