Summary
After another bad day at his temp job, Blake comes home to an overpowering rotting smell that has worsened over the last month. He notes his ongoing sleep problems and the recent late-night thumping incidents linked to Whitney Cross. In the kitchen, fruit flies swarm as Blake searches for the source and opens the refrigerator, finding several Styrofoam takeout containers Whitney brought home from the diner.
Blake opens one container and finds moldy, decomposing food, confirming the stench. He throws out all the containers and takes the garbage outside, but the smell and fruit fly problem persist. Krista arrives as Blake is killing fruit flies, and he tells her about the rotting food and his frustration with Whitney.
Krista acknowledges the smell but minimizes it, suggesting air freshener and open windows. Blake declares he wants Whitney out, citing the late-night noises and her hostile looks; Krista counters that Blake is stressed from losing his job, hating his temp work, and not sleeping, and that Whitney is not the root cause. She also reminds him that Whitney’s rent is keeping them afloat financially.
Blake concedes to keep Whitney but insists she must not leave rotting food again. Krista volunteers to speak to Whitney herself and to set up fruit fly traps with dish detergent and apple cider vinegar, telling Blake to stay out of it to avoid making things worse. Blake opens windows throughout the apartment to air it out and feeds their fish, Goldy, reflecting on his frayed nerves and itchy rash sensations returning.
As Blake stands in the living room, Whitney appears at the top of the stairs in her usual jeans and hoodie and silently watches him. Her smirk and timing make it clear she overheard Blake and Krista’s entire conversation about her, leaving the conflict simmering and unresolved.
