Blake walks to Becky and Malcolm’s building to meet Krista, rattled by a chance encounter with his ex, Gwen. He pleads with Krista for another chance, but she insists his paranoia and fixation on Whitney are why she left. Becky intervenes and ends the visit, though Krista sends Blake off with cookies and a brief hug, giving him a sliver of hope. Blake resolves to win Krista back and privately blames Whitney for his troubles.
Summary
Blake heads on foot to Becky and Malcolm’s apartment for his meeting with Krista. Waiting outside, he notices he looks disheveled and accidentally flips his shirt inside out while fixing it. He is recognized by his ex-girlfriend, Gwen, now with white-blond hair, who announces she is engaged and was promoted. The awkward exchange leaves Blake more anxious about losing Krista.
Blake is allowed up by the doorman and rides the elevator to the twelfth floor. The smell of cinnamon signals Krista is baking snickerdoodles, a sign to him that she is stressed. Krista, looking tired but familiar with her messy bun and pink lips, answers the door and lets him in briefly.
In the kitchen, as trays of cookies bake and cool, Blake tells Krista he misses her and asks for another chance, insisting nothing happened with Whitney. Krista says she believes nothing happened but says Blake is unhealthily obsessed with Whitney and constantly talks about her, calling Whitney a nice, ordinary person. Blake bristles and internally considers that Whitney may have killed Herb Zimmerly and could be framing him, but he withholds these thoughts, knowing they would sound paranoid.
Krista states she is worried Blake is losing his grip on reality and that his paranoia and refusal to listen prompted her to move out. When Blake raises his voice demanding specifics, Becky appears, arms folded, and firmly tells Blake it is time to leave.
Embarrassed when Becky points out his shirt is on backward, Blake agrees to go. Before he leaves, Krista packs him about six snickerdoodles in a Ziploc bag and slips them into his jacket pocket, an intimate gesture that gives him hope. She gives him a brief but tight hug, while Becky disapproves from the background.
Blake departs determined to win Krista back, concluding internally that he must “get rid of” Whitney, reinforcing his fixation on her as the source of his problems.
