On the morning of his first day at a temp job, Blake faces petty but aggravating frustrations caused by Whitney and an irritable confrontation with neighbor Mr. Zimmerly. Summary
Blake awakens early for his first day at a temp job that could become permanent, determined to take it seriously as a path back to a stable career. His morning derails when the shower is lukewarm—he assumes Whitney used the hot water—and he discovers his soap and shampoo bottles are empty, forcing him to use Krista’s products. He decides he will talk to Whitney about not overusing his things.
In the kitchen, Blake finds the Frosted Flakes box he left out is empty and still on the counter, which he attributes to Whitney finishing it and not mentioning it. Frustrated and short on time, he throws the empty box to the floor, making a mess he then has to vacuum, inadvertently waking Krista.
Krista comes downstairs, and Blake vents that Whitney used his toiletries and ate his cereal. Krista points out that Blake did give Whitney permission to use his products and suggests he calmly address it with her rather than sulk. With no time for a real breakfast, Blake grabs an apple, notes fruit flies are increasing, and prepares to leave for work.
Krista adjusts Blake’s tie, kisses him, and offers sincere encouragement, telling him he looks great and to “knock ’em dead.” Buoyed by her support, Blake leaves feeling cautiously optimistic about proving himself at the temp job.
Outside, neighbor Mr. Zimmerly intercepts Blake, snidely commenting on Blake finally getting a job and complaining that Blake’s front steps are “filthy” and a disgrace to the block. Blake reluctantly says he will hose them down, though he has no intention to do so. He proceeds to work, ignoring the neighbor’s demand.
