After Maddy tells Justin to go home and wait, Justin spends a sleepless night hoping Emma will return for real. Emma texts that she will come talk in the morning, but Justin grows more afraid when he sees that Emma has left her key behind and the children keep asking where she is. Justin blames himself for letting Emma face Amber alone and fears that, even if Emma comes back to the house, she may already be gone emotionally.

In the morning, Justin rushes to the door and immediately sees that Emma has brought no luggage and that Maddy is waiting outside with the car running. Emma asks to talk in the living room, and Justin desperately tries to delay the conversation by suggesting they rest first. Once they sit down, Justin recognizes that Emma is about to leave and begs her to stop before she can say it outright.

Emma explains that she is not okay and does not trust herself to stay around Justin or the children. Emma says her childhood with Amber left her unstable, terrified of love, and quick to flee, and she admits she almost disappeared without saying goodbye the night before. Because Emma does not want to repeat Amber's damage by becoming another unreliable adult in the children's lives, Emma decides she has to leave and deal with her own trauma before trying to be a partner or parent figure.

Justin responds by confessing that he loves Emma and has since they met, and he offers to wait for her. Emma refuses to let Justin build his future around the hope that she might someday be ready, because Emma knows the pain of waiting for a broken parent to change. Justin realizes Emma is making the painful but responsible choice for herself, for the children, and possibly for him as well. Holding Emma, Justin understands that real love cannot fix this moment and that Emma may become the love of his life without becoming his lasting soulmate.
