Chapter 8: Justin
Overview
Justin and Emma's first in-person date begins with Justin feeling instantly overwhelmed by how much he likes her, but it quickly settles into real chemistry. As the day unfolds, Emma reveals the depth of her neglected childhood and shows her compassion by helping a disoriented stranger, which makes Justin admire her even more and reflect on his own bitterness toward his mother. The chapter ends by shifting the story's direction sharply when Emma returns home and discovers that her unpredictable mother has suddenly arrived.
Summary
Justin is thrown off the moment he sees Emma in person. Although they have already messaged, called, and planned their date carefully, Justin becomes so nervous that he fumbles basic things, including spilling her coffee in her lap. Emma stays relaxed and easygoing, which helps Justin recover, and they soon settle back into the comfortable banter they already have online.
Justin takes Emma to Benny and Jane's house, where Jane has arranged a visit with foster kittens. The kittens give them an easy, playful start, and Emma quickly tells Justin it is already one of the best dates she has been on. As they talk, Emma explains that Maddy is her foster sister and reveals that she entered foster care because her mother repeatedly left her alone for long stretches. Emma describes surviving one abandonment as a child by stealing and eating carrots from a neighbor's garden until she turned orange and was finally taken to the hospital. Justin is horrified by the neglect, but Emma insists she chooses empathy over anger and believes her mother loved her despite everything.
Justin then takes Emma to a quirky breakfast place he chose to show her something memorable about Minnesota. Before they go inside, Emma notices that a woman on a bus bench seems disoriented. Drawing on her memory-care experience, Emma realizes something is wrong, gently joins the woman's confused version of reality, and has Justin call the woman's daughter, Samantha. Emma stays with Lisa until Samantha arrives in tears to take her home. Justin is struck by how observant and compassionate Emma is, and Emma explains that sometimes the kindest thing is to meet people where they are instead of forcing a frightening truth on them.
Over breakfast, coffee, and a game of chess, Justin and Emma keep learning each other. Emma easily beats Justin at chess, and their joking conversation turns serious when Emma asks about Justin's father. Justin tells Emma that a drunk driver killed him on his way to work. Emma responds with a reframing that comforts Justin: maybe the person who dies in a tragedy is the one who, in some unseen way, took someone else's place out of love. Her perspective deepens Justin's admiration for her and reinforces how differently she handles pain from how he handles his own resentment toward his mother.
After breakfast and a trip to Minnehaha Falls, Justin drives Emma back to the island property and tries to set up another date, agreeing that next time she can meet his dog. Their goodbye is warm enough that Justin thinks about kissing her, but the moment breaks when Emma sees a yacht pulling up to the dock. Shocked, Emma recognizes the woman aboard as her mother, turning an unexpectedly wonderful first date into a sudden new complication.
