Chapter 26: Emma
Overview
Emma spends the chapter moving from denial to clarity about two important relationships. Amber’s visit to the hospital exposes, yet again, how little care Emma’s mother actually gives her, while Justin’s thoughtful lunch and late-night call show Emma what genuine attention and emotional support look like.
As Justin opens up about the strain of raising his siblings, Emma feels herself becoming attached in a way that is deeper than physical attraction. By the end of the chapter, both of them openly want to be together, but the storm that keeps Emma away reinforces how badly they already miss each other.
Summary
At work, Emma admits to Maddy that she is still fixated on Justin after their goodbye kiss. Emma replays the moment and realizes she had been wanting Justin to kiss her all through their mall date, which makes her think their attraction is building into something she wants to act on.
Emma is then surprised when her mother, Amber, arrives at the nurses’ station carrying lunch for Neil. Amber is disappointed to learn Neil is in surgery and seems more concerned that nobody at the hospital knows she is his girlfriend than with seeing Emma. After Amber leaves the food behind and goes, Maddy bluntly points out that Amber only reaches out when it benefits Amber, not because she is trying to care for Emma. Emma resists at first, but Maddy’s argument forces Emma to admit that her mother still treats her like an afterthought, and the real pain comes from losing hope that this will ever change.
Before Emma can fully fall apart, Justin arrives with Chelsea and surprises Emma by bringing her lunch. He has also packed food for Maddy, asks about their upcoming third date, and gives Emma a lingering hug before leaving to handle more errands for his siblings. The contrast between Amber’s thoughtlessness and Justin’s care immediately lifts Emma’s mood, and even Maddy and Hector openly approve of him.
That night, Emma and Justin talk by phone after Chelsea goes to bed. Justin finally unloads how overwhelmed he is by becoming the full-time guardian of Alex, Sarah, and Chelsea: medical appointments, school paperwork, preschool drop-offs, household chaos, rising expenses, and the emotional strain of seeing Chelsea cry for her mother. Emma listens, reassures him, and tells Justin again that taking the kids was the right thing to do, which deepens their emotional intimacy.
The call turns flirtatious when Justin admits he misses Emma and repeatedly asks her to come over that night. During a video call, Emma feels both strong physical desire and an unfamiliar wish simply to be near him, which scares her because it suggests her feelings are becoming more serious. When Justin tells Emma she is the only thing in his life making him happy right now, Emma agrees to go to him, but a thunderstorm makes crossing the lake impossible. They end the night wishing they could be together, leaving Emma even more aware of how much Justin matters to her.
