Chapter 14: Emma
Overview
Emma visits Neil’s house expecting another disaster, but instead finds Amber cheerful, domestic, and seemingly steadier, which tempts Emma to believe her mother may finally be changing. That hope drives a sharp fight with Maddy, who wants Neil warned before Amber harms him and damages Emma’s life in the process.
Emotionally overwhelmed after the argument, Emma turns to Justin for refuge and breaks one of her own rules by going to his family’s house. In the safety of Justin’s world, Emma reveals how childhood instability and foster care taught her to withdraw and get small, deepening their intimacy.
Summary
After work, Emma goes to Neil’s mansion because Amber has ignored her texts all day, and Maddy wants Emma to try one last time to get Amber out before the situation explodes. Instead, Emma finds Amber happily installed in Neil’s life: painting a huge floral mural in his entryway, spending his money on flowers and candles, and talking as if she is improving the entire house. When Emma carefully raises the problem that Neil is also Emma’s boss and landlord, Amber brushes it off, insists the relationship is harmless, and reveals that she has been in therapy for two years. Because Amber looks healthy, calm, and hopeful, Emma lets herself believe that this time Amber may really be changing.
Amber gives Emma a bucket of roses and invites Emma and Maddy to stay for dinner, but Emma declines and returns to the pontoon. Maddy immediately challenges Emma’s optimism and argues that Neil should be warned about Amber’s past before he gets hurt and Emma and Maddy suffer the fallout. Emma refuses because she cannot control Amber and does not want to destroy what might be Amber’s first real chance at a stable life. The disagreement becomes one of Emma and Maddy’s rare serious fights, and Emma finally admits out loud that she knows something is wrong with Amber but still cannot be the one to ruin this possibility.
After sending Maddy away, Emma walks back toward the house, only to see Amber and Neil embracing intimately in the kitchen. The sight, combined with the fight and the feeling of being stranded without her purse, keys, or privacy, sends Emma into an emotional spiral. Emma recognizes the old survival response in herself: when stress becomes too much, Emma withdraws, shuts down, and wants to disappear until she feels safe again. With nowhere to hide, Emma feels herself getting small.
When Justin texts to ask about Emma’s first day at work, Emma reaches for him as a refuge and asks about dinner. Justin says he is babysitting his little sister Chelsea, but invites Emma over anyway, joking that meeting a four-year-old does not violate the rules of their arrangement. Emma breaks her usual boundary because she needs a safe place to land. At Justin’s mother’s house, Emma meets Brad, who instantly charms her, and then meets shy little Chelsea. The ordinary, warm family atmosphere helps Emma calm down almost immediately.
Over spaghetti, Emma tells Justin about working with Neil, Amber’s takeover of the house, and the fight with Maddy. Justin listens instead of judging and says that if Amber is truly trying to change, Emma does not have to sabotage the relationship and Neil can make his own choices. Later, while they clean up and Justin’s younger sister Sarah comes home early, Emma opens up more deeply. Emma explains that foster care and Amber’s instability taught her to become invisible, to need no one, and to retreat to a tiny emotional island when life feels dangerous. Justin reframes that habit as survival rather than cruelty, and Emma leaves the conversation feeling understood, safer with Justin, and more aware of how much she trusts him.
