Epilogue
Overview
In the epilogue, Justin reveals that two years after Emma returned to him, they are living together and preparing for the next stage of their life as his family situation changes. He decides to propose using a Toilet King billboard, turning the running joke that once marked their beginning into a deeply personal engagement. Despite mixed reactions from friends and family, Justin follows through, and Emma happily says yes.
Summary
Two years into living together, Justin writes a Reddit post asking whether he would be wrong to propose to Emma using a Toilet King billboard. The plan grows out of one of the couple’s oldest inside jokes: Toilet King billboards were part of how they first met, and over time the joke became a recurring symbol in their relationship through kisses, gifts, radio prizes, and holiday decorations.
Justin explains that he has been wanting to marry Emma for a while, and the timing feels important because his mother is due to return early and take back custody of his younger siblings in a few weeks. As Justin and Emma prepare to find a place of their own nearby so they can remain close to the children, Justin decides to stage the proposal in an apartment in his old building, where a Toilet King billboard is visible outside the window. He arranges with the landlord to use the hard-to-rent unit for a few days, plans to fill it with roses and lights, and gets approval to have the billboard changed to read “will you marry me?” before inviting loved ones to celebrate afterward.
Justin admits that most of the people he consulted dislike the idea. Justin’s mother, aunt, and the wives of his two best friends think proposing in front of a gross toilet-themed sign is disrespectful, while Emma’s mothers are only mildly supportive because they do not fully share the joke’s meaning. Emma’s best friend and Doug, however, find the idea funny and fitting. In a brief update, Justin reveals that he went through with the plan, Emma loved it, and Emma said yes.
