Maddy interrupts Justin and Emma in Emma’s room after returning to the island earlier than Emma expected. Maddy explains that Neil brought her back from the airport and mentions seeing Emma’s mother with Neil. Because rain is coming and Neil can take Justin back by boat, Emma tells Justin he should leave, and Justin realizes staying would force Emma to drive him later in bad weather.

As they get dressed, Justin tries to understand what their first time together means and asks when he can see Emma again. Emma avoids giving him a clear answer, tells him she needs to think, and says only that she wishes Justin could come with her. When Justin leaves, Emma kisses him back, but her distance makes Justin fear the kiss may be a goodbye.

On the mainland, Justin is thrown back into the realities of his life. He picks up Brad and the children, deals with Chelsea’s overtired misery, listens to Alex, and comes home to bills, laundry, work delays, and school preparation. The contrast between the island and his ordinary responsibilities convinces Justin that Emma may care about him but not want the complicated life that comes with him, and he decides he cannot blame her if she chooses to leave.

Late that night, after Emma has not texted, Justin expects the worst when she finally calls. Instead of ending things, Emma asks whether Justin wants company and reveals that she is standing outside his house in the rain with the rosebush. Emma tells Justin, “We’ll try it. I’ll stay,” reversing Justin’s fears and committing herself to seeing whether their relationship can work in real life.
