Chapter 33: Justin
Overview
The chapter turns a quiet recovery morning into an emotionally loaded domestic scene, as Justin cares for Emma and both finally admit they missed each other. Justin’s hope briefly rises, but his internal narration makes clear that he still sees their connection as doomed by Emma’s reluctance and the weight of his family responsibilities. The chapter ends with Justin suddenly becoming nauseated, hinting that the aftermath of Emma’s illness is not over.
Summary
The morning after Emma’s frightening illness, Justin stays on the island and makes Emma oatmeal with bananas because he wants something gentle for her stomach. As Emma sits at the table, Justin privately aches over how natural the domestic moment feels to him. Justin realizes he wants ordinary shared routines with Emma, but he also believes he will never get that future with her.
Justin asks how Emma feels and suggests they watch a movie if she is up for it, making clear that he does not want to leave unless Emma wants space. Emma quickly says she does not. Emma then asks whether Justin is angry with her because they have barely texted, but Justin answers that he assumed Emma needed distance after the situation with Amber.
Justin admits that he missed Emma, even though he knows Emma has already signaled that she does not want a real relationship with him. Emma quietly says she missed him too. That exchange gives Justin a surge of hope, but Emma does not say anything further, so the uncertainty remains. Internally, Justin reflects that their week apart only proved how deeply he cares; if not for the children depending on him, he feels he would have followed Emma anywhere.
As they keep talking, Emma asks about the children and Justin’s mother, and Justin gives careful, lighter answers. He does not tell Emma how hard the children are struggling or how much his responsibilities have complicated his life and his future with her. Justin’s private conclusion is bleak: both of them feel the connection, but Emma still does not want what he wants, so he expects the relationship to end when she leaves. Moments later, Justin suddenly feels nauseated, stops washing dishes, and rushes to the bathroom.
