Chapter 43: Emma
Overview
Emma collapses into shock and dissociation at an airport hotel after the revelations about her family and her abrupt flight from Justin. Maddy finds her, stabilizes her, and reframes Emma's self-blame as a trauma-driven attachment pattern rather than proof that Emma harms everyone around her. By the end of the chapter, Emma shifts from total avoidance toward accountability, agreeing to face Justin in person before following Maddy into the next phase of recovery.
Summary
Emma sits alone in an airport hotel room after fleeing Neil's house, too numb and overwhelmed to choose a flight or even feed herself. Replaying the day only deepens her detachment: within hours, Emma learned the truth about her family, met new relatives, severed ties with Amber, and walked away from Justin. Emma recognizes that she is in shock, but the emptiness feels safer than fully feeling what has happened.
As Emma spirals into thoughts of disappearing entirely, Maddy arrives at the hotel and pounds on the door until Emma lets her in. Maddy explains that she hid AirTags in Emma's luggage because she knew Emma might run but would not abandon her bags. When Emma says she is the worst thing that could happen to Maddy or Justin, Maddy rejects that idea and names what she suspects instead: a trauma-based avoidant attachment pattern shaped by years of neglect.
Maddy takes control of the immediate crisis by making Emma sit down and eat food she brought for her. The sandwich, chips, and juice begin to clear Emma's fog, and Emma recognizes how carefully Maddy anticipated her needs. That care reaches Emma emotionally, even though she still feels largely shut down.
Once Emma is more stable, Maddy tells her the central truth of the chapter: Emma cannot escape herself by disappearing. Maddy insists that Emma is not defined by what Amber did to her, but by what she chooses next, and warns that if Emma keeps running, Amber's damage will govern the rest of Emma's life. Those words finally break through Emma's numbness and make her want to cry.
When Emma asks how to fix anything, Maddy offers help and asks for Emma's trust. Emma agrees, but admits she cannot let Justin help her right now because being close to him also means risking attachment to the children and entering another unstable situation she fears she cannot sustain. Even so, Emma knows Justin deserves a direct goodbye, so she says she needs to see him in person before she leaves. Maddy agrees to take her to him the next day, then says that after that they will go somewhere Emma "always should have been," setting up Emma's next step.
